Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
The debut of Nathan Drake, descendant of the famous sailor Francis Drake, kicked off one of the defining series of the PlayStation 3. The player sets out for treasure lost on an abandoned island, where the quest for El Dorado leads to firefights with mercenaries and a mysterious supernatural threat. The game combined acrobatic platforming inspired by Tomb Raider with cover-based shooting reminiscent of Gears of War, and cinematic storytelling with quality direction and voice acting. Climbing is deliberately forgiving and fluid, so it never becomes an obstacle to pacing, while firefights force constant repositioning, since enemies flank cover and grenades reliably flush the player out of hiding. Between the action, there are simple puzzles solved in Drake's notebook full of notes and sketches, which pleasantly reinforces the adventurous atmosphere.
Naughty Dog, known up to that point mainly for Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter, showed for the first time with this title that it could tell a more adult, Hollywood-flavored story with humor and chemistry between characters. The graphical performance was impressive for its time and became a showcase for the capabilities of the Cell processor, especially in the densely overgrown jungle and water effects. Although the shooting occasionally suffered from duller arena battles and the game at times fell short of later installments, critics praised the atmosphere, the pacing, and the charisma of the main hero, voiced by Nolan North.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune laid the foundation for a formula Sony later used across its platforms, and steered the studio toward the cinematic action-adventure as its dominant genre. For the PS3, it was one of the first proofs that the console could compete with the Xbox 360 in exclusive experiences, and the game became a pillar of the console's early catalog. It also introduced the characteristic humorous banter between Drake and Sully, which became a trademark of the entire series. The title helped Sony demonstrate that even a completely new franchise with no prior history could immediately win over critics and players alongside established first-party series from other platforms. Today it plays like an appealingly tight, short prologue to something much bigger.
