Trine 2
Trine 2 was released in 2011 and builds on the success of the Finnish studio Frozenbyte's first game with an expanded world, new puzzles, and improved graphics. The trio of heroes – the warrior Pontius, the thief Zoya, and the wizard Amadeus – once again journeys through a fairy-tale kingdom full of physics-based puzzles, but this time with a richer range of environments, from swamps and forests to underground caves and castle chambers. New character abilities, such as the wizard's control over water or the warrior's use of his shield as a platform, open up further puzzle-solving options, and together with improved physics they give players even more room for experimentation. The thief Zoya also gained new arrow types that can set objects on fire or link them together with a rope, adding another layer of variety to solving puzzles.
On PlayStation 3, the game showed a notable graphical leap over its predecessor, with even more detailed lighting, particle effects, and more colorful environments that ranked among the most visually impressive titles of the generation. Alongside the mandatory story path, the game also offered optional bonus areas and collectibles that rewarded a more thorough exploration of each level. The orchestral music, accompanied by delicate sound effects, heightened the fairy-tale atmosphere and the game's calm pace, letting players take in the scenery just as much as solve puzzles.
Trine 2 received even better reviews than its predecessor, with critics particularly praising the visuals and the expanded co-op for up to three simultaneous players, whether local or online. The game cemented the series' reputation as one of the most beautiful puzzle platformers on the market and inspired a number of other titles combining physics with fairy-tale aesthetics. Trine 2 remains a recommended choice today for players seeking a visually captivating and relaxing gaming experience, whether playing alone or with friends.
