Trine: Enchanted Edition
Trine: Enchanted Edition is a reworked version of the first game in the Trine series, which the Finnish studio Frozenbyte originally released in 2009 on PC and PlayStation 3. Enchanted Edition arrived in 2014, first as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and brought completely redone graphics, new lighting, improved physics effects, and reworked textures, thanks to which the fairy-tale world of the three heroes - the warrior, the wizard, and the thief - looks significantly better than the 2009 original. The gameplay remains faithful to the original: the player switches between the characters as needed and combines their abilities to solve physics-based puzzles and fight enemies in a platformer with RPG elements, where the warrior slashes with a sword, the wizard conjures objects, and the thief shoots a bow and climbs ropes. The game also retained the ability to join or leave a second player's ongoing game at any time, so cooperation works informally, without needing to plan a joint session from the very start.
Unlike later entries in the series, which were released on multiple platforms simultaneously, Enchanted Edition was initially tied specifically to PlayStation 4, making it the first modern showcase of what Trine looks like remastered on that era's new console generation. Cooperative play for up to three players was retained, so the entire campaign can be played together, solving puzzles that require the coordination of all three characters at once - for example, when the wizard conjures a platform that the warrior climbs onto with the thief's help. The reworked version thus offers the same story and level design as the 2009 original, but in a significantly improved audiovisual package that holds up better even years later. Only later did Enchanted Edition reach other platforms as well, meaning the PlayStation 4 version was the one that first showed just how much a remaster can change the overall impression of the five-year-old original.
Why play it: Enchanted Edition is the best way to experience the original Trine - both newcomers unfamiliar with the series and fans who want to compare just how much the graphics and atmosphere have changed since 2009 thanks to the remaster will appreciate this visually most beautiful version of the first game.
