Call of Duty: Ghosts
Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013) placed the player in the near future after the destruction of most American military satellites, where the main heroes – brothers from the Ghosts unit – try to face a newly formed South American federation controlling most of the US weapons arsenal. The game was developed by studio Infinity Ward and, for the first time in the series, featured a canine companion named Riley, who could be directly controlled in some missions, as well as a new social system called Squads, where the player assembles and upgrades their own squads of characters to face off against AI or other players.
The PlayStation 3 version launched on November 5, 2013, together with the Xbox 360 and PC editions, so still before the introduction of the new PS4 and Xbox One consoles. It contains the complete campaign, multiplayer, and the new Extinction survival mode against alien creatures, so content-wise it's identical to the next-gen releases. Technically, though, it matches the capabilities of what was by then a seven-year-old console – it runs at a lower resolution, with a lower frame rate and simpler textures than the PS4 version. The paid expansion of four map packs also arrived on PS3 later than on Xbox, which had timed exclusivity on all of the game's downloadable content thanks to a marketing deal with Microsoft.
For many players, this was in November 2013 the last big game they could play on PlayStation 3 before moving to the new generation, making Ghosts one of the last major multiplatform titles released simultaneously for both generations of Sony consoles.
The game's campaign unfolds mainly from the perspective of brothers Logan and David Walker and their father, a special forces veteran, and emphasizes cinematic, action-oriented sequences, including a space mission and submarine action. Despite the technical limitations of the seventh console generation, the entire dramatic structure of the story and all the multiplayer maps available at launch were preserved on PlayStation 3.
Why play it: Despite the seventh generation's technical limitations, players on PlayStation 3 get to enjoy the complete story and all the multiplayer maps from launch, so they don't miss out on content.
