Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare cut the series loose from World War II in 2007 and moved it into the present day, setting the bar for an entire following generation of military shooters. The campaign alternates between the perspective of a British special forces soldier and an American marine, taking the player from a night raid on a cargo ship through street fighting all the way to a frozen Pripyat. It's the mission where you crawl in a ghillie suit through tall grass past enemy patrols, waiting for a single shot, that became one of the most-quoted sequences in the genre's history. The game also dared to include scenes nobody else touched at the time, including a moment where the player's character survives a nuclear blast only to die in the ruins of the city.
Even more significant than the campaign, though, was the multiplayer's impact. The developers built in an experience and rank system, gradual unlocking of weapons and attachments, a custom loadout editor, and so-called killstreaks, which rewarded a series of kills without dying with a recon plane, an airstrike, or an attack helicopter. The combination of perks, customizable weapons, and compact, clearly built maps created an addictive reward loop that dozens of competing games then copied in some form. Gunplay has real weight and readable feedback, match pacing is relentlessly brisk, and death arrives after a split second of inattention.
On PlayStation 3 the game was among the first titles to show the console in a better light: detailed weapon models, elaborate interior lighting, and sound design that still ranks among the best-executed in the genre. Reception was extraordinary, the game collected numerous awards, and for years it set the direction the action genre would follow. Today the campaign feels shorter and more straightforward than players remember it, but its direction, shifting perspectives, and ability to escalate a scene still hold up after all these years. Modern Warfare remains the moment when online shooters definitively turned into mass entertainment.
