Moved the series into the present day and set the cinematic standard for war shooters.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare moved the series from the Second World War into the present day, and in doing so reshaped what action games would look like for years afterward. The campaign alternates between two storylines, the British SAS and American Marines, taking the player from a night-time boarding of a ship in a storm through the streets of a Middle Eastern city to a nuclear catastrophe that ranks among the genre's most powerful moments. The narrative is tight, cinematic, and unafraid to briefly strip away the player's agency to underscore the impact of events.

In terms of gameplay it's a brisk, corridor-based shooter that still puts weight on precise weapon handling, aiming down sights, suppressive fire, and cooperation with squadmates. The iconic mission "All Ghillied Up," in which the player creeps through a contaminated zone in a ghillie suit, shows that the developers also knew how to turn the pace down. The real revolution, though, was the multiplayer. Its system of levels, weapon unlocks, perks, and kill-streak rewards created an addictive progression loop that virtually the entire competition has copied ever since.

On PC the game ran beautifully even on the mid-range hardware of the time, offering sharp visuals with elaborate lighting and very good weapon sound design that still ranks among the best the series has ever produced. Music and sound design build tension without ever drowning out the action. Critics received the title enthusiastically, and it became one of the most successful games of its generation, kicking off the franchise's yearly release rhythm. Today the campaign is still excellent to play, though it's on the shorter side and some of its scripted moments read as predictable after all these years. Compared to later entries in the series it feels surprisingly restrained, since it doesn't yet chase endless effect escalation and instead relies on pacing and precisely timed twists. As a historical milestone that shaped the direction of modern military shooters and the shape of online progression in dozens of other games, it's impossible to overlook.
