The official closing chapter of the R-Type series; over a hundred playable ships, possibly a genre record.

R-Type Final was officially presented by Irem as the closing chapter of the long-running horizontal space shooter series R-Type, which was reflected in the game's extraordinarily generous content. The title offered an incredible over one hundred playable ships, from classic models from previous entries to experimental and bizarre machines, with each ship having its own characteristics, beam type, and Force module behavior, effectively turning the game into a museum of the series' history. New ships were also gradually unlocked based on flight hours logged and conditions met, so building up the hangar was in itself a long-term goal.

The gameplay remained faithful to the traditional recipe, that is, slow, deliberate progress through stages full of organic alien constructs, precise handling of the Force module, which can be attached to the ship from the front or back or launched forward as a standalone shield, and the need to memorize the layout of hazards, which was especially appreciated by longtime fans of the genre. The visual side combined detailed 2D sprites with three-dimensionally modeled environments and bosses, so the game felt visually current despite its nostalgic nature, and a dark, oppressive visual style inspired by biomechanical art gave it an unmistakable atmosphere.

The presence of secrets, unlockable ships, and several alternate endings increased replay value for collector-minded players. Although it was a niche title aimed primarily at devoted series fans, R-Type Final is still remembered today as a dignified and content-packed farewell to one of the most influential shooters in video game history and a milestone for the genre on PlayStation 2. The game also included an extensive gallery describing the history and characteristics of each ship, making it a genuine celebration of the series' history, and Irem shelved the franchise for a long time after its release.
