A revolutionary fusion of JRPG and student-life simulator; school by day, fighting demons by night.

Persona 3 from 2006 by Atlus brought a revolutionary fusion of classic JRPG with a student-life simulator, fundamentally redefining the direction of the entire Persona series. The player is a member of the secret Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES), living in the Iwatodai dormitory: by day he attends high school, builds relationships called Social Links with other characters, and plans his free time, while at night, during a hidden Dark Hour between one day and the next, he and his companions climb an endless procedurally generated tower called Tartarus, full of Shadows, fighting them with the help of Personas, manifestations of one's own psyche summoned with the series' iconic gesture of pressing a gun-like device called an Evoker to one's temple.

This visually shocking gesture stirred controversy at the time of release but also became a defining symbol of the series. Combat has its own rules: only the protagonist can switch Personas to exploit an enemy's weakness, while the player only gives party members general tactical orders, making every encounter feel more like commanding than direct control. The calendar also pushes players to plan ahead, every night in Tartarus drains stamina, and key boss fights arrive relentlessly on the full moon. A dark undertone of death, existential themes, and Shoji Meguro's unforgettable, stylish soundtrack, combined with an elaborate social-link system that directly strengthens battle Personas, created an entirely new genre structure.

Persona 3 kicked off a phenomenon that later grew into a massively successful franchise with anime adaptations, spin-offs, and rhythm games, and is still considered a work that redefined what a modern JRPG can be. The game also came out in an expanded FES version with the supplementary epilogue The Answer, and was later remade as Persona 3 Portable for the PSP. Persona 3's influence on the genre remains evident today; the calendar structure and social links became a standard adopted by dozens of later Japanese RPGs.
