Dragon Quest Builders
Dragon Quest Builders starts from a simple idea: what if, in the story of the first Dragon Quest, the hero had failed and the world was left in ruins? The player awakens into such a world as the last person who remembers how to build, and their task is to restore civilization piece by piece. The broken landscape gradually becomes a village, inhabitants arrive, and with them come new tasks, recipes, and reasons to keep building. The structure is divided into chapters set in different regions, each starting almost from scratch, which keeps up the pace and prevents the game from becoming aimless block-clicking.
Building takes place in a block-based world, but unlike open sandboxes, the game has clearly defined goals. Villagers ask for specific rooms, and when the player assembles the right combination of furniture and dimensions, the room activates and starts providing bonuses. On top of that, the base needs to be defended, since waves of enemies arrive at regular intervals and a poorly designed fortification will collapse. Combat consists of simple action skirmishes tied to the durability of materials and tools, so the depth isn't in the fighting itself but in how well prepared you are. The combination of set tasks and free-form creation makes the game something between a building simulation and a classic adventure.
The Vita version runs at a lower resolution and with shorter draw distance than the home version, but the gameplay remains complete, and portability suits this type of game exceptionally well. The visuals retain the series' typical style thanks to instantly recognizable monster designs, and the music works with Dragon Quest's orchestral themes. Critics received the game very well, praising how it gave block building a clear goal and narrative. Today, Dragon Quest Builders is seen as one of the smartest attempts to combine a signature Japanese RPG with a sandbox, and on the Vita it represents one of the most pleasant games for long evenings.
