A watercolor fairy tale from Squaresoft; the player assembles the world by placing artifacts.

The Mana series always aimed somewhere different from other action RPGs, and Legend of Mana from 1999 is its most beautiful proof. Squaresoft created a game that looks like a watercolor fairy tale come to life — every location is a hand-painted work of art, and the player literally assembles the whole world of Fa'Diel themselves by placing artifacts on an empty map that conjure up towns, forests, and dungeons out of nothing.

This nonlinear structure is the heart of the entire experience. There is no single fixed storyline; instead, you choose the order in which you unlock the three main narrative arcs and dozens of side stories. The action combat plays out in real time, and on top of that you can forge your own weapons, grow crops, raise pets, and experiment with a rich item system. The game doesn't hold your hand — it rewards curiosity.

It's precisely for this uniqueness and dreamlike atmosphere that Legend of Mana earned a devoted cult following. It's not a game for everyone seeking a straightforward narrative, but anyone who surrenders to its calm, meditative rhythm and the beauty of its hand-drawn worlds will find one of the most distinctive titles in the entire PS1 library.
