Fast, funny minigames for two players head-to-head; the ideal light-gun party fun from Namco.

Point Blank is a light-gun party shooter from Namco that, unlike cinematic action games such as Time Crisis, bet everything on fast, funny, and incredibly addictive minigames. Players shoot targets, balloons, cans, or animated characters across dozens of short challenges that gradually get faster and more complicated — from classic target shooting through color recognition and counting objects, to memorizing the positions of targets that briefly vanish from view. The game was built primarily for two players competing head-to-head, with the losing player progressively losing lives, which made it a great competitive party game for a wide range of people.

On PlayStation, it launched with support for the GunCon light gun, and it could also be played without one using a regular controller, albeit with noticeably less comfort and precision. The visual style was simple and colorful, the music upbeat and arcade-like — the whole game bet on instant fun and short play sessions rather than story or atmosphere, and the individual minigames were shuffled randomly, so no two playthroughs were quite the same. On top of that, the difficulty scaled smoothly with the player's success, so both complete newcomers and experienced players looking for a real challenge could enjoy it. This is exactly what made it a popular party game even among players who otherwise didn't seek out action games and only picked up a controller rarely and casually.

Point Blank got several sequels and is still remembered as one of the most fun light-gun titles on PlayStation, period. The game also poked fun at itself through two animated characters commenting on the on-screen action, giving it a distinctive, slightly zany character that set it apart from more seriously toned competing light-gun games. Its simple but precisely tuned design shows that not every great game needs complex systems — sometimes a perfectly fitting mechanic, infectious humor, and uncompromising pace are enough.

Why play it: For a group of friends looking for fast, funny entertainment, Point Blank is one of the most fun light-gun titles on PlayStation — proof that a perfectly fitting mechanic and infectious humor are all it takes.
