Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 2 is exactly the kind of sequel that takes good foundations and polishes them to a shine. With it, Namco significantly advanced both the graphics and the feel of flying on the PlayStation in 1997 — a smoother frame rate, cleaner models and brisker action make the aerial battles an even more gripping spectacle than in the first installment.
The arsenal expanded, more carefully designed missions were added and, above all, the first hints appeared of what would later make the series famous: a fictional world, the onset of a story line and the feeling that your flights have a greater context. Successes unlock new aircraft and better equipment, so there's strong motivation to come back and improve. It stays pleasantly arcade-like and accessible throughout.
Among fans of flying games on the PS1, Ace Combat 2 is a must — it's the moment when the series found its self-confidence and stepped toward the form that would make it the ruler of the genre. For retro enthusiasts a great choice, whether as nostalgia or as proof of how well the PlayStation handled fast 3D action.
