A survival horror set in zombie-infested New Orleans; weapons physically wear down and fall apart.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners places the player in the flooded streets of New Orleans, overrun by zombies and warring factions of survivors, where every decision – who to save, who to rob, who to trust – affects the story's direction and relationships with the city's various factions. The game relies on physical interaction with everything around you: the player searches dead bodies, opens drawers, disassembles weapons, and improvises melee combat with whatever is at hand, from a kitchen knife to a baseball bat that, after a few hits, gets thoroughly battered and must be repaired or replaced.

Fighting zombies demands precision and caution – a single careless swing can end in a fatal bite, and the game punishes recklessness far more harshly than classic action titles. The crafting system, inventory management, and gradual gear upgrades give exploration purpose, while morally ambiguous side quests and decisions affecting the fate of individual factions give the story weight. The sound design, the muffled creaking of floors in flooded buildings, and sudden attacks from the dark create a dense horror atmosphere that virtual reality amplifies even further, and music appears only rarely, letting silence and the sound of sloshing water carry most of the tension.

Upon release, the game was hailed as one of the high points of the survival horror genre in VR, showing that a licensed zombie game could offer depth comparable to a full-fledged independent title. The later release of a sequel confirmed that the concept of physical combat against zombies in a flooded city has lasting appeal among players, and many players returned to New Orleans several more times after their first playthrough to try different decisions. To this day it remains among the titles often cited as proof that VR can tell an emotionally powerful story with real moral dilemmas, not just offer brief technical demos.

Why play: For its emotionally powerful story with real moral dilemmas and physical combat against zombies, this ranks among the high points of survival horror in VR, worth replaying for its different decisions.
