Worms Revolution
Worms Revolution from 2012 brings the series back to a 2D view after the experiment with 3D graphics in the earlier entries and adds two new mechanics that change the tactics of classic battles: dynamic water that floods the battlefield and can drown worms, and different types of soldiers with four distinct classes, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The result is a deeper tactical layer on top of the familiar foundation of alternating turns and destructible terrain, where players have to consider not only their aim but also how the entire map changes as the water level rises.
The PC version launched alongside the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases and offers essentially identical content, but benefits from the precision of mouse controls when judging shot angle and power, which especially helps with the new gravity and water mechanics, where the trajectory of some weapons bends depending on the terrain and water level. Via Steam, the game also offers easy matchmaking, achievements, and the ability to track statistics, which for many players makes PC the natural platform for long-term play and tracking their own improvement.
The level design makes much more use of height differences and bodies of water than earlier entries, so even experienced players have to rethink established tactics - hiding behind a hill may no longer be enough if the area later floods with the tide and the opponent knows how to use the water to their advantage.
The four soldier classes also give players a decision at the start of the match that affects the whole game, since each class suits a different playstyle and forces them to build their team according to their intended tactics, not just out of habit. This choice adds a strategic layer to match preparation that the series' older 2D entries didn't have.
Why play it: Worms Revolution on PC will please series fans who want new tactical elements in the form of water and different soldier classes, while also preferring precise mouse controls and the convenience of multiplayer via Steam.
