Snatcher (CD, fan překlad)

Adventure (cyberpunk) 1992 Konami ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h 🛡 ESRB Mature 17+ 🔞 18+

A cyberpunk noir adventure from Hideo Kojima; the CD version is considered the definitive edition.

Few games can evoke the atmosphere of cyberpunk noir detective fiction as faithfully as Snatcher — a visionary adventure from Hideo Kojima that, as early as the beginning of the nineties, showed where interactive storytelling could go. The CD version for the PC Engine is considered one of the definitive forms of the game, and thanks to a fan translation it became accessible to players outside Japan as well.

The story takes place in a dark future where humanity is threatened by mysterious android beings called Snatchers, who kill people and take over their identities. You step into the role of investigator Gillian Seed and journey through a world full of atmosphere, Blade Runner influences, and Kojima-esque intricate storytelling. The game is largely a command-menu-based adventure — you examine environments, interrogate characters, piece together clues, and gradually uncover a conspiracy.

For its time, Snatcher was extraordinarily ambitious: fully voiced dialogue on CD, a quality soundtrack, and cinematically directed scenes made it an experience closer to an interactive sci-fi film than to the games of the day. Kojima's signature is felt at every step — from the intricate characters through black humor to moments of tension and horror that can genuinely chill you.

Snatcher's cultural significance is enormous. It's one of the early milestones of Kojima's career, a foreshadowing of what he would later perfect in the Metal Gear series, and a cult favorite among adventure and cyberpunk fans to this day. The fan translation of the CD version was crucial for the Western community — without it, this icon would have remained locked behind a language barrier for most players.

Snatcher is a game you shouldn't miss if you're interested in the history of storytelling in games or have a soft spot for dark sci-fi. It's an atmospheric, cleverly written title that ages with unexpected grace.

Why play: Kojima's cyberpunk noir adventure with cinematic atmosphere and a powerful story — one of the milestones of interactive storytelling.

The PC Engine version, today also available thanks to a fan translation, is based on the later Japanese CD release, which added a third, concluding act compared to its computer predecessors and used the CD-ROM for full voice acting and spoken scenes. The English version for the Sega Mega-CD in the early nineties was the first to bring Snatcher to Western players, complete with professional English voice acting, but because of localization time and budget constraints it cut that third act, so the story ends earlier than in Japan. If you want Gillian Seed's complete story, go for the PC Engine version; the Mega-CD release remains valuable mainly as the first taste of Kojima's vision for English-speaking audiences.
