The legendary combination of base strategy and turn-based combat against aliens.

X-COM: UFO Defense was released in 1994 by Mythos Games studio in cooperation with publisher MicroProse, and in Europe it was released under the title UFO: Enemy Unknown. The game combines two layers of play: on the strategic world map, the player runs the international organization X-COM, builds and expands bases, funds research and equipment production, negotiates with the supporting governments of individual countries, and decides where to send a squadron to intercept and shoot down alien craft, while the tactical layer moves the action to a turn-based battlefield, where individual soldiers with their own equipment, injuries, and morale face alien life forms amid the destructible terrain of cities, countryside, and downed craft.

The turn-based system with action points, the ability to fire both on command and reactively (so-called reaction fire), hidden areas outside line of sight, and the permanent consequences of losses gave the game a tension that was unusual in any previous strategy game — the death of an experienced soldier was irreversible, and the player grew emotionally attached to the named characters, their statistics, and their experience. On the PC hardware of the time, the game ran in VGA graphics with an isometric view; the music and sound effects (explosions, screams, sounds of alien weapons) supported well the atmosphere of paranoia and constant escalation of the threat, as more dangerous types of aliens, civilian abductions, and the need to dissect and research captured technologies were added as the game progressed.

The game was immediately received by critics and players alike as an exceptionally original and deep experience, and it is still considered a foundational work of the turn-based tactical strategy genre with base management. It influenced dozens of later titles (from the official remake XCOM: Enemy Unknown from 2012 to independent projects inspired by its system), and even more than thirty years later, thanks to community ports and modern interfaces, it remains playable and serves as an example of how to connect strategic decision-making with emotionally demanding tactical combat, where every single decision carries weight and no mission is entirely without risk.

Why play it: For fans of turn-based strategy, this is a foundational work of the genre that, thanks to community ports, still works today and offers tense decision-making where no mission is without risk.
