Gunship 2000
Gunship 2000 is a helicopter combat simulation from MicroProse, a sequel to the earlier Gunship title from the mid-1980s, bringing a much more detailed campaign system and more modern graphics. The player sits in the cockpit of American combat helicopters, primarily the AH-64 Apache, OH-58 Kiowa, or AH-1 Cobra, and carries out campaign missions ranging from terrain reconnaissance and convoy escort to direct attacks on tank columns and air-defense systems. The game offers career progression, where the pilot gradually earns higher ranks and access to more modern equipment and weaponry, and the individual campaigns are set in various geographical scenarios, including a hypothetical conflict in Central Europe, the Middle East, and the South American jungle.
The controls combine fairly realistic flight physics with a clear interface that's manageable even for players without an air-simulator background — various difficulty levels are available, along with the option to turn off more complex avionics systems and automatic radar target acquisition. Full-color VGA graphics and smooth terrain animation with hills, rivers, and settlements were cutting-edge for the genre in 1991, complemented by convincing sound effects of explosions, warning alarms, and engine roar. The overall atmosphere captures well the tension of flying low over enemy territory, where any hesitation can mean the loss of an expensive machine and its entire crew, and the game reinforces that pressure by making lost helicopters genuinely missed in the career mode.
Gunship 2000 became one of the most commercially successful simulators of its time and is still mentioned today as an important milestone in the genre of helicopter combat games, one that also inspired later titles such as Comanche: Maximum Overkill. Even decades later it remains surprisingly playable thanks to its clear mission structure, the satisfying feeling of gradually upgrading equipment, and the variety of its campaigns, even though its controls and graphics inevitably feel dated today and the enemy AI is noticeably simpler compared to later games.
Why play it: For fans of helicopter combat simulators — a clear mission structure and satisfying equipment upgrades keep the game playable today, even though the graphics and enemy AI have noticeably aged.
