F-15 Strike Eagle III
F-15 Strike Eagle III is an air combat simulation from MicroProse, the third installment in the series focused on the multirole fighter-bomber F-15E Strike Eagle of the US Air Force. The game offers campaigns set in several different world conflict regions, and the player carries out missions ranging from dogfights through destroying ground targets to suppressing air defenses, choosing weapons according to the type of task and able to switch between simplified arcade and more demanding simulation controls depending on their own experience and appetite for detailed planning before each takeoff.
This installment brought significantly improved 3D graphics compared to its predecessors, with textured aircraft and terrain models, which noticeably advanced the visual side of the series, and it also offered a more elaborate briefing, mission planning, and a clearer battlefield map before takeoff. The sound design, with control tower voice callouts, radar warnings, and weapon system sounds, supported the feel of modern 1990s air combat well and gave individual missions a cinematic pace and tension. The series as a whole long maintained a reputation as a simulator that offers enough depth for more experienced players while not discouraging anyone with control complexity right from the start, which made it a natural entry point into the genre for many home computer owners of the time.
F-15 Strike Eagle III is considered the culmination of its series on DOS and an example of how MicroProse's accessible, more arcade-oriented flight simulations managed to advance technically and content-wise alongside more demanding competing titles like Falcon 3.0. Today it represents a solid example of a popularizing approach to the genre that also attracted players without a deeper interest in fully realistic flight simulators and their complex navigation and fire-control systems, while still offering enough varied missions for repeated play even after finishing the main campaign.
Why play it: If you're looking for an accessible, more arcade-style flight simulation with plenty of varied missions for repeated play, this is the culmination of MicroProse's series on DOS.
