Gunship 2000
Gunship 2000 is the sequel to the successful helicopter simulator Gunship, and it arrived on the Amiga in a version using the AGA graphics chipset, making it one of the more technically demanding titles for the Amiga 1200. The game puts the player in command of an attack helicopter, primarily the AH-64 Apache, in fictional and historically inspired conflicts, with an emphasis on tactical mission planning, weapon selection, and cooperation with other units on the battlefield, including coordination with ground forces and other helicopters in a flight.
Compared to the previous installment, Gunship 2000 expanded the range of controllable aircraft, refined the helicopter flight model and damage system, and added more detailed maps with varied terrain, where using cover and low-flying tactics to evade anti-aircraft defenses was essential. The graphics on the AGA Amiga could display more detailed scenery and explosion effects than older simulators, though the resolution and frame rate still reflected the limitations of a home computer compared to the powerful PC rigs of the time. The sound design, onboard computer callouts, and rotor noise added to the tension of low-level reconnaissance flights over enemy territory, where the player has to rely on using terrain for cover.
The game continued MicroProse's tradition of thoroughly crafted military simulators and was praised for combining tactical depth with accessibility for a wider audience. On the Amiga, it was one of the late and most ambitious simulators, showing how far the platform could push the complexity of military simulations in the AGA era, and it remains today an interesting showcase of early-1990s helicopter combat, especially valued by fans of tactical simulators. For owners of more powerful Amigas, it was one more proof that the platform, even at this stage of its life cycle, could still deliver ambitious, graphically demanding military simulations comparable to contemporary PC output.
Why play it: For fans of MicroProse's military simulators, it offers tactical depth combined with accessibility and is one of the most ambitious helicopter simulations of the AGA era on the Amiga.
