The first installment of the series that came to dominate sports games; the isometric view gave football a sense of space.

FIFA International Soccer is the first installment in the series that made football games the best-selling sports product in the world, and even in this form it's clear what won audiences over. Instead of the traditional top-down view, the developers chose an angled isometric perspective, which gives the pitch a sense of depth and makes the players feel like real characters with their own animations. For its time, the match feels spectacular: build-up play, through balls, crosses and headers are all readable movements rather than mere shifts of pixels. The game offers exclusively national teams, friendly matches, tournaments, and the option to set half length, weather and opponent difficulty, so a single season can fill many long evenings.

The DOS version targeted the stronger machines of the day, and the reward was smooth animation for a larger number of characters on screen at once, digitized crowd sounds and commentated moments that gave the match a televised feel. The crowd reacts to chances, a goal triggers roaring and a Mexican wave, and this atmosphere was the main reason the game felt different from previous European arcade football titles. The controls are more accessible than the competition's, the ball sticks to the player more reliably, and the basic tactics explain themselves. Support for two or more players was one of the main draws, since a tournament with friends was exactly what the game did best.

Reception was very strong and the brand immediately established itself as an annual series that gradually added club competitions, licensed rosters and three-dimensional engines. This first entry is interesting precisely as a starting point: it still has arcade lightness, but already the production values that nobody else in the genre could match. It still plays surprisingly pleasantly today, if the player looks past the rougher controls and missing clubs. What remains is fast, easy-to-follow football and a nostalgic glimpse of the moment sports games started to look like a television broadcast.
