The start of EA Sports' longest-running football franchise, faithful even on the Game Boy's small screen.

FIFA International Soccer marked the beginning of one of the longest-running sports game franchises ever, and its Game Boy version brought EA Sports' football experience to a handheld console too. The game offers matches between national teams from around the world, with the player controlling their side from a perspective that had to adapt to the smaller screen — the pitch is shown from a different angle than on the home consoles of the time, but the core football mechanics, such as passing, shooting, and offside calls, remain intact. Players can build a lineup, choose tactics, and work through a tournament without losing the feeling of playing an actual football match.

The controls emphasize simplicity and quick understanding, in keeping with the philosophy of the first FIFA game, which aimed to offer a fun, accessible form of football rather than a complex simulation. Even on the Game Boy, players can choose between various national squads and play through tournament matches, while the game gradually teaches positioning on the pitch and basic tactical elements such as ball possession or set-piece play. The sound effects are sparse, but the encouraging fanfare after a scored goal gives even the modest monochrome presentation the dose of sporting joy players still appreciate after a string of tournament matches.

As part of the birth of the FIFA brand, this handheld version had its own significance too — it showed that Electronic Arts' sports license could work across platforms, even ones with limited technical capabilities. For football fans who wanted to play away from home, it was a welcome alternative to the home console versions. From today's perspective, it's an interesting glimpse into the early days of a series that later became one of the best-selling sports game franchises in the world.
