Ve stínu havrana
Ve stínu havrana is a Czech fantasy game with RPG elements, whose grimly toned title hints at the darker atmosphere of the whole story, set in a fantasy world threatened by a mysterious force tied precisely to the motif of the raven, which becomes both a symbol of impending misfortune and a clue to averting it. Playing the main hero, the player moves through a story full of battles, conversations with characters, and the gradual development of their own character and abilities, with the game trying to offer a complete fantasy world with its own mythology and dark conflict background, gradually revealed to the player through conversations with characters and discovered text records.
The technical execution matches smaller domestic productions of the turn of the millennium – the graphics and animations are more modest than the foreign competition, but the game relies on atmosphere, story, and a musical score that underlines the darker tone of the whole narrative and accompanies the player even in the most tense moments of playing through the game. Emphasis is placed on the gradual, thoughtful revelation of the conflict's background and on building tension rather than on technical spectacle or extensive action sequences, which makes the game feel more intimate than many foreign fantasy RPGs of the same time.
Within the overall context of the offerings of the time, Ve stínu havrana thus remained a more intimate, less widely known title, known mainly among true fans of domestic fantasy creations, but it still represents an interesting and honest example of the ambitions of smaller Czech studios to create their own darkly toned RPG in an era dominated by major foreign productions in this genre. Today the game is remembered as a natural and integral part of the broader mosaic of domestic attempts at fantasy RPGs of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when small domestic studios honestly tried to find their own place alongside dominant foreign brands.
