Hidden & Dangerous
Hidden & Dangerous is a tactical action game from Illusion Softworks that puts the player in command of a small commando unit operating behind enemy lines during World War II, with individual missions requiring careful planning of both approach and loadout before deployment. The game combines direct control of a single soldier with tactical command of the entire four-member squad, careful route planning, the use of cover, and coordinating attacks from multiple directions, which at the time of release represented an unusually elaborate approach to the military action genre on Windows 9x computers.
Missions take place across large outdoor maps as well as inside buildings and demand thoughtful advancement from the player rather than uncompromising assault, since overwhelming enemy fire can quickly decimate a squad. The atmosphere of the World War II conflict is underscored by realistically depicted weaponry, period-accurate settings, and a musical score, while the graphics engine offered large outdoor spaces that were unusual among tactical action games at the time. Switching between soldiers allowed the player to direct each team member's movements individually, turning each mission into more of a tactical puzzle than a straightforward firefight.
Hidden & Dangerous achieved international success and ranks among the most significant Czech gaming achievements of the 1990s, which put domestic development on the world stage even before the same studio became famous for Mafia. The game influenced further work in the tactical war action genre and is still remembered today as one of the milestones that got people talking about the Czech game industry abroad. Even after all these years it remains playable thanks to its emphasis on tactics, which holds up well even next to newer titles, and many still consider it a harbinger of the later international success achieved by the creators who went on to make the Mafia series.
