An endurance platformer by Hudson Soft based on Wonder Boy; your energy burns like a fuse.

A half-naked hero in a cap running through the jungle, whacking stone enemies while his energy constantly drains as if someone lit a fuse beneath his feet. That's Adventure Island, a brisk platformer that launched its own long-running series on the NES and became one of the hallmarks of publisher Hudson Soft.

The game comes from Hudson Soft and is closely tied to the arcade template Wonder Boy. The main hero, Master Higgins, at first glance resembles the mascot Hudson chose as its face in the 80s. The principle is simple and addictive: you run from left to right, throw axes or stones, jump over chasms, and collect fruit. That's not just decoration, because your vitality gauge constantly drops and the only way to replenish it is precisely by consuming the collected food. This mechanic creates a constant time pressure that sets Adventure Island apart from calmer platformers.

A key element of the fun is the skateboard, on which Higgins picks up high speed but loses the ability to stop. Risk and reward go hand in hand, because fast progress saves your dwindling energy, but you also easily end up in a chasm or impaled on an obstacle. The game is famous for its uncompromising difficulty, where a single touch of an enemy costs you a life.

Culturally, Adventure Island showed how closely the arcade and console markets were intertwined in the eight-bit era and how a single concept (Wonder Boy) could spill over into several differently branded series. For Hudson Soft, Master Higgins became an important mascot, and the game kicked off a line of sequels on the NES and other platforms.

To this day, Adventure Island holds a reputation as a nerve-wracking but fair challenge. It's a title players return to for memorizing levels, hunting for hidden eggs with bonuses, and trying to conquer its relentless pace. It belongs to the basic equipment of anyone who wants to know the tougher wing of the NES platformer scene.

Why play it: For an adrenaline-fueled, uncompromising platformer with constantly draining energy and a skateboard, which became the cult flagship of Hudson Soft.
