Namco's arcade recipe brought to the DS - drifting as the main mechanic of fast circuits.

Ridge Racer DS brought to the Nintendo DS the basic recipe of Namco's popular arcade series: drifting as the main gameplay mechanic, simple rules, and fast circuits full of turns. The player tears through tracks inspired by previous entries in the series and must master the art of the power slide, which allows corners to be taken without losing speed – most of the game's competitive potential rests on exactly this. The selection of cars and their upgrades gives the game at least a basic layer of progression, with individual mastery classes gradually unlocking faster and more demanding machines.

The graphics were, at the time of release, among the better offerings the DS had in the racing genre – the tracks are colorful, smooth, and readable even at high speed, which was not entirely a given for three-dimensional racing on a handheld. The game uses the touchscreen only marginally, with the emphasis remaining on classic button controls, which was appreciated by players who preferred the traditional approach known from home consoles. The musical accompaniment follows the series' electronic style and complements the feeling of racing along the track well, though it's more of a functional backdrop than distinctive melodies.

Ridge Racer DS was seen as a solid, if not groundbreaking, transfer of the brand to a handheld, appreciated especially by fans of drifting arcade games and people familiar with older entries from stationary consoles. Unlike realistic simulators, it didn't emphasize authenticity but rather immediate fun and easy-to-grasp rules, which made it accessible even to casual players. To this day it works as a pleasant demonstration of how Namco managed to adapt its key series to the limitations of a portable console, and for drifting fans it remains an interesting choice even years later.
