Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time / Darkness / Sky

roguelike RPG Chunsoft Pokémon ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

The player wakes up as a Pokémon in procedurally generated dungeons; the story and ending will move even the toughest players.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky brings the world of Pokémon into the roguelike dungeon crawler genre, produced by studio Chunsoft, which was also behind the original Mystery Dungeon series. At the start, the player fills out a personality test, based on which they are assigned a specific Pokémon as their playable character, and together with a partner they then move through procedurally generated dungeons, fight in a system reminiscent of turn-based combat, and complete tasks for a rescue team. The Time and Darkness versions offer nearly identical content, differing only in a few exclusive Pokémon and dungeons, while Sky represents an expanded version with an additional story thread and new playable characters.

The trilogy's strong point is an unexpectedly emotional and darker story than the main series, dealing with themes of friendship, loss, and self-sacrifice for others, which set the game apart from the mostly adventurous tone of standard Pokémon games. The gameplay combines procedural generation with fixed genre principles — the player must track hunger, manage inventory, and face the loss of items upon fainting in a dungeon, adding tension typical of roguelike games. Sky additionally contains special episodes from the perspective of supporting characters, which deepen the game's world and explain the motivations of key characters in the main storyline.

The Explorers trilogy is still counted among the best-rated spin-offs of the Pokémon series thanks to combining simply accessible gameplay with an unusually elaborate story, and for many players it represents a first encounter with the mystery dungeon genre as such. The story's emotional climax is still cited today as one of the strongest moments in the entire history of Pokémon spin-offs, which sets the trilogy apart from many later attempts by the series and still secures it a loyal community of fans who enjoy returning to the story.
