The linear action series was replaced by an open, interconnected world with backtracking to old areas.

The blue bomber transformed into something new and surprisingly bold on the Nintendo DS. Mega Man ZX took the long-running action series and infused it with the lifeblood of an open, interconnected world. Instead of a linear run through levels, the player explores a sprawling map, returns to visited areas with new abilities and gradually uncovers the threads of a larger story. For fans of the series it was a refreshing change of course.

The core of the game remains what Mega Man does best: brisk, precise action and platforming with an emphasis on mastering demanding boss fights. The novelty is the „Live Metal“ Biometal system, thanks to which the hero transforms into various combat forms, each offering different weapons and movement abilities. On top of that, the game employs a metroidvania structure, where new abilities open up previously inaccessible paths and encourage thorough exploration.

Mega Man ZX was developed and published by Capcom in 2006 as the successor to the popular Mega Man Zero series from the Game Boy Advance. The team built on the darker, more narratively ambitious tone of that line and pushed it into a new hardware generation. The characteristic anime visuals and high difficulty were preserved, which has long defined the series.

Culturally, ZX joined the ranks of titles that critics praised for their courage to experiment with form, though the game did not escape criticism for the sometimes confusing navigation of its expansive world. It received a direct sequel, Mega Man ZX Advent, and today it is part of the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, which made the series accessible to modern audiences on current platforms.

What makes Mega Man ZX interesting is precisely that blend of proven hard action and an unconventional, more open structure. It is a game for players who love a challenge and are not afraid of serious difficulty, while also appreciating a series that refuses to stand still. In the context of the DS library, it is one of the more distinctive action platformers for the demanding.

Why play: A demanding action platformer that combines classic Mega Man with a more open metroidvania structure and transformations.
