Drop7

Puzzle 2009 iOSAndroid Area/Code ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h 🧩 Puzzle

Falling numbered discs that vanish based on how many neighbors match; Tetris's smarter cousin.

Drop7 combines Tetris-style falling discs with numbers and a mathematical puzzle: each disc has a number from one to seven printed on it, and a disc disappears once as many adjacent discs gather in a column or row as the number indicates. The player only chooses which column to drop the disc into; the rest is a matter of quick counting and planning several moves ahead before the board fills up dangerously.

Area/Code released the game in 2009 as an attempt to find something in the crowded falling-block puzzle genre that no one had done yet – instead of colors, it relied on numbers and their combinations, which pushed the game closer to a logic puzzle than reflex-based action. The result is a title that rewards patient thinking and planning more than quick fingers or lightning reactions to falling objects. The sober, almost graphic design without unnecessary characters further emphasized that this is primarily a game about numbers, not a visual spectacle.

On a touchscreen, a single gesture is enough to play – tapping a column – so the controls never become an obstacle between the player and the puzzle itself. Drop7 makes up for its lack of graphical flashiness with an elegant scoring system, where even a small mistake in one move can throw off the entire board and complicate dozens of subsequent moves. Special "cracked" discs, which need to be removed before too many of them accumulate, add an element of tension and risk planning to an otherwise purely logical game.

Why play it: Recommended for players who like number puzzles with clear rules and want a game that can be put down and picked back up again basically anytime without losing context.
