Absorbing smaller organisms in a cosmic fluid; a meditative puzzle with ambient music.

Osmos HD places the player in the role of a microscopic organism floating in a viscous fluid, where the only way to move is to eject your own mass in the opposite direction – the more you lose, the smaller you get, but the faster you move. The goal is to absorb smaller organisms and avoid larger ones until you become the dominant being in a given environment full of slowly drifting dots.

Hemisphere Games released the title in 2010 as a meditative counterpart to the noisy arcade games of the early App Store era – the pace is slow, the music ambient, and the visual style reduced to softly glowing circles on a dark background without unnecessary ornamentation. The mechanic, based on conservation of momentum, gives the game physical credibility, even though the rules remain understandable without any knowledge of physics or prior experience with similar titles. As a result, the game earned a reputation as one of the best-rated indie titles of the early App Store era, often mentioned in discussions about the artistic side of mobile games.

Touch controls – tapping in the direction the player wants to eject mass – proved more natural than the original mouse control on computers, because the gesture mirrors the movement the organism performs on screen. Various levels change the rules enough (gravitational vortices, swarms of enemies, enclosed containers) that the game stays fresh from the first to the last mission without feeling repetitive. The HD release also brought higher resolution and smoother animations for newer devices of the time, without changing anything about the game's underlying concept.

Why play it: Suits players who want to slow down and enjoy an audiovisually calm game with a fresh mechanic, rather than chase a high score or show off quick reflexes.
