One of the first tower defense titles on mobile, which showed that the genre belongs here.

Fieldrunners is among the first tower defense games to show on mobile that the genre fits just as well as on a computer or console. The player places towers along a path that waves of enemy units advance along, combining tower types to handle the growing pace and variety of attackers, from foot soldiers to armored vehicles and aircraft.

Subatomic Studios released the game in 2008, at a time when the App Store was just getting started and the catalog of strategy titles was still very thin. Fieldrunners stood out mainly for its legible isometric graphics and how well the "build a tower, watch the battle" principle translated to the touchscreen – placing a tower is a single gesture, with no complicated menus or lengthy tutorials before the first round. The colorful, comic-styled look also set the game apart from the genre's stricter sci-fi templates and gave it a lightness that worked even for players who otherwise didn't play strategy games.

The map's clarity and clearly distinguished enemy types (foot soldiers, vehicles, airborne units) gave players room to experiment with different defense strategies without the game requiring twitch reflexes or split-second decisions under pressure. The title's success helped kick off an entire wave of other tower defense games on mobile platforms in the years following its release. Several maps were designed to also function as closed puzzles with a single optimal tower layout, pushing the game closer to a logic puzzle than pure strategy.

Why play it: Suitable for strategy fans who appreciate a clear tower layout without unnecessary frills and want to see how the genre actually got started on mobile.
