The most ambitious entry in the horror trilogy; defend the house and your son as the path branches by pace.

Splatterhouse 3 is the pinnacle of the horror trilogy and at the same time its most ambitious installment. In 1993 Namco pushed the series further: Rick, with the ill-omened Terror Mask, no longer defends only his girlfriend but also his own house and family, his son David, from a horde of monsters that have broken into his mansion. The combat shifted from linear progression to a more open, exploratory approach.

The most striking innovation is branching based on time: you move more freely through the levels, a clock ticks, and how fast and which way you progress affects the story's development and which ending you'll see, you even risk losing your loved ones if you don't make it in time. What's more, as Rick builds up strength he bursts into a monstrous berserker transformation in which he delivers devastating attacks. The graphics and animation are among the best the horror genre offered on the Mega Drive.

Retro enthusiasts value the third game for how it moves the formula from simple brawling toward tension and decision-making under pressure. The gloomy atmosphere, the chilling setting of your own cursed home and several endings give the game a replayability the earlier installments lacked. A dignified and unforgettable climax to one of the darkest series of the 16-bit era.
