Donald Duck hunts for the treasure of King Garuzia; a platformer with an emphasis on exploration.

When SEGA struck gold with Disney platformers, it did not rest on its laurels and came up with something surprisingly different. QuackShot Starring Donald Duck is not just another platformer but a treasure-hunting adventure in which the irritable Donald Duck sets off across the whole world on the trail of the ancient treasure of King Garuzia. The result is a game that cleverly mixes platform action with elements of exploration and backtracking.

The heart of the fun is Donald's plunger gun, which shoots rubber suckers. These serve not only to stun enemies but also to solve puzzles, climb walls, and open up paths ahead. The game sends the player between several locations across the planet, from Mexico through Transylvania to the Egyptian pyramids, and requires the player to return to previously visited places with newly acquired abilities. In this, QuackShot comes closer to an adventure concept than to a straightforward platformer.

The title was developed and published by SEGA in the early nineties as part of its successful Disney line. Donald's character lends the game a distinctive humor and temperament that carries over into his animations, full of typical duck irascibility. It is precisely the main hero's personality that sets QuackShot apart from the cooler, more anonymous platformers of the time.

Visually the game benefits from colorful, varied graphics and diverse environments that give the world-spanning journey the proper touch of exotica and adventure. Each location has its own atmosphere and enemies, so the game never feels monotonous, even though its basic mechanics remain the same throughout.

Among Mega Drive fans, QuackShot earned a reputation as a hidden gem that many today value even more highly than the more famous Castle of Illusion. The combination of a familiar character, an inventive main weapon, and an adventurous structure makes it a title worth rediscovering.

Why play: For the original combination of a platformer and a treasure adventure, spiced up by Donald's unmistakable character.
