The sequel to the dolphin Ecco's adventure; ocean beauty and merciless difficulty beneath the surface.

Few game series look so serene and play so mercilessly as Ecco. Tides of Time, the continuation of the tale of a telepathic dolphin, pulls you beneath the ocean's surface, where beauty and despair swim side by side.

Ecco: The Tides of Time follows up on the successful first installment and pushes its ideas further. You play as the dolphin Ecco, who moves through vast underwater worlds, communicates with other creatures via sonar, and searches for a way to avert a threat to the entire ocean. The gameplay combines swimming, puzzles, navigating a maze of tunnels, and battles with enemies, all under the constant pressure of dwindling oxygen, which forces you to return to the surface or seek out air pockets.

The game earned a reputation as an unexpectedly demanding title. Beneath its calm, almost meditative surface lies a design that does not spare the player: navigating complex levels, precise timing, and puzzles that use time travel can really put you through the wringer. Compared to the first installment, Tides of Time adds new abilities, transformations for Ecco, and more varied environments, including surreal, almost dreamlike passages.

Visually the series is famous for its atmosphere. Winding sea caves, rays of light penetrating from the surface, and the organic animations of sea creatures create a world that feels alive and mysterious at once. The music complements the sense of a lonely journey through the depths and underscores the melancholy tone of the whole game.

Ecco became one of the distinctive icons of the SEGA brand from the Mega Drive era and later received ports and re-releases on other platforms. The combination of an unusual hero, atmospheric presentation, and high difficulty secured the series a lasting place in players' memories. For many, Ecco is synonymous with a bold, different approach to game design at a time when the shelves were ruled by fast mascots.

Why play it: For the hypnotic atmosphere of the underwater world and original gameplay, provided you do not mind that the game will not hold your hand.
