Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
There are platformers that age badly, and then there is Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, which to this day looks and plays like a little animated film you are allowed to step into yourself. Here SEGA took the world's most famous cartoon star and set him in a fairy-tale castle full of color, fantasy, and cute but surprisingly inventive enemies. The result is among the very best the Mega Drive offered in the field of platformers.
The story is simple: the evil witch Mizrabel has kidnapped Minnie, and Mickey must set out to rescue her through a series of fantastical worlds. In terms of gameplay it is a classic platformer in which Mickey defeats enemies by jumping on their heads or throwing objects like apples and marbles. What elevates the game is the variety of environments, from a forest and a toy world to a candy landscape, and the precise, fluid controls that make movement a joy.
The game was developed by SEGA itself and came out in the early nineties as one of the console's flagship titles. The collaboration with Disney was strategically key for SEGA, as it supplied it with family-friendly, high-quality brands during the fierce battle with Nintendo. Castle of Illusion was proof that a licensed game need not be a rushed job but can instead rank among the pinnacle of the craft.
Visually the game still captivates with its multicolored palette, soft animation, and eye for detail that evokes classic Disney films. Together with a catchy musical accompaniment it creates an atmosphere that is gentle and welcoming, yet offers enough challenge to entertain even experienced players.
The title's cultural significance is confirmed by the fact that Castle of Illusion became the foundation of an entire series of Disney games from SEGA and, in 2013, received a full-fledged remake. For those who remember it, it remains one of the first reasons to fall in love with the Mega Drive.
Why play: For a timeless, beautifully animated platformer that combines Disney magic with first-class game craft.
