Wonder Boy leaves pure platforming behind for an action RPG with swords and dungeon secrets.

A beach running game turned into an expedition into an underground full of monsters, swords and secrets. Wonder Boy in Monster Land was a bold step with which the Wonder Boy series moved from pure platforming to an adventure with elements of an action RPG. On the SEGA Master System it became one of the most beloved titles in the entire library.

It originated as a SEGA arcade machine from 1987, developed in collaboration with the studio Westone. The hero no longer just runs from left to right, but explores an interconnected world, buys better equipment from merchants, collects gold from defeated enemies and gradually grows stronger. This combination of platform action with the purchase of armor, swords and spells was extraordinarily addictive for its time.

On the Master System the game shone with colorful graphics and a cute yet combat-challenging design. Sword fights against varied creatures, hunting for hidden doors and solving small puzzles gave the game a depth rare among action titles of the eight-bit era. The feeling of your hero gradually growing stronger kept pulling you ever further.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land is a key work in the family tree that later culminated in the Monster World series and the now-revered Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. It was right here that action, exploration and RPG mechanics first fully came together, giving the whole brand its unmistakable identity.

For Master System owners, especially in Europe and Brazil, where the console held a strong position, it was one of the reasons to fall in love with SEGA. The game showed that the eight-bit machine could offer not just fast action but also a longer, more elaborate adventure with a sense of progression.

To this day Wonder Boy in Monster Land ranks among the most treasured gems of the Master System library. Its mix of genres foreshadowed later metroidvania titles, and its charm has lost none of its magic. It is a small yet great adventure worth discovering.

Why play: For the pioneering fusion of platformer and action RPG, the addictive strengthening of your hero and the unmistakable charm of eight-bit SEGA.
