Metal Slug Mobile
Metal Slug Mobile brings SNK's legendary arcade run-and-gun series to keypad phones and tries to preserve the core of what fans love about the series — breakneck action, armored soldiers, tanks, and a hail of bullets flying from every side of the screen. The player controls a soldier using the numeric keypad, runs left to right, shoots, jumps, and picks up weapons like the flamethrower or rocket launcher, which briefly grant serious firepower and turn an otherwise vulnerable little character into a mobile juggernaut. The classic mechanic of freeing captured soldiers in exchange for bonuses is preserved too, as is the ability to hop into the armored Metal Slug vehicle, which crushes enemies under its treads and briefly turns the pace of the game into a much more aggressive, crushing advance forward.
Graphically the game works with pixel art adapted to the small displays of period phones, and the music uses simple loops that still evoke the right arcade atmosphere full of tension and the exaggerated action typical of the whole series. Keypad controls naturally can't offer the same precision as an arcade joystick and the two buttons of the cabinet, so the pace of the game is noticeably slower than the arcade original and the levels are shorter, adapted to brief play sessions on the go or during a break between other duties. Even so, the levels still show the typical mix of military parody, oversized enemies, and humorous details the series is known for.
At the time of release the game was seen as a pleasant surprise — it showed that even graphically and mechanically demanding action brands could be brought to a phone without completely losing their identity and drive. For the Metal Slug series it was one of the first steps beyond home consoles and arcade cabinets toward mobile platforms, which were at the time only beginning to figure out how to handle more demanding genres. Today the title mainly feels like a nostalgic curiosity and proof of how inventively developers had to work within the limitations of period phones to preserve at least part of the original's magic.
Why play it: For fans of action platformers and the Metal Slug series who'll appreciate a nostalgic demonstration of how more demanding arcade action fit onto a phone without a touchscreen.
