Spider-Man
Spider-Man for Game Boy Color is an action platformer that takes players through New York's streets and interiors full of wall-crawling passages, web-swinging, and fights against familiar villains including Doctor Octopus and Scorpion. The level design alternates horizontal action sections with moments where the player uses Spider-Man's ability to climb walls and ceilings to bypass obstacles or find hidden paths, setting the game apart from typical platformers on the system. The player gradually collects upgrades for the spider-powers, which make moving through the levels progressively smoother and open up previously inaccessible shortcuts. Some sections also require a combination of climbing and precise jumping between buildings, creating a genuine sense of a superhero moving through the city, even though rendering height on the small display naturally has its limits.
The graphics from Torus Games stick to a comic-book aesthetic with bold character outlines and readable animation of the main hero, making it clear even on the small display when Spider-Man is climbing, jumping, or attacking with his web. Boss fights require memorizing attack patterns and precise timing, raising the difficulty above the regular sections. The music underscores the heroic tone of the comic-book source material and accompanies the game's action pace well, while brief animated transitions between levels give the game a more cinematic structure than is typical for GBC.
As part of the wave of licensed Spider-Man titles released across multiple platforms around 2000, the game didn't captivate critics as much as its console sibling versions, but among comic fans it's appreciated for a solid rendition of the core climbing and swinging mechanics, which came across as surprisingly convincing even on such modest hardware. Today it's a solid choice for anyone who wants to experience Spider-Man in a compact, portable form.
Why play it: For comic fans it offers a surprisingly convincingly executed climbing and swinging mechanic even on the GBC's limited hardware, making it a solid choice for Spider-Man in a compact form.
