An action-adventure from the future creators of Shantae; combat, batarangs, and stealth sections.

Batman: Chaos in Gotham is an action-adventure created for Game Boy Color by WayForward Technologies, the studio later famous for the Shantae series, and even in this early title their craftsmanship is already evident. Playing as Batman, the player moves through levels inspired by classic locations from the comics — the sewers, a circus abandoned by the Joker, or Ra's al Ghul's estate — and fights a rogues' gallery including the Joker, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy, combining close-quarters combat, batarang throws, and stealth sections. Batman also gradually gains additional gadgets and abilities that open up new paths forward and encourage the player to revisit earlier parts of levels with new equipment.

The visuals rank among the best the GBC has to offer: characters are finely animated, environments carry a strong gothic-city atmosphere, and effects like lightning or smoke lend the scenes a cinematic quality that few other games on the platform ever achieved. The music underscores the comic's dark tone, and together with responsive controls it creates a pace that flows smoothly between action and exploration. Boss fights with individual villains have their own distinctive behavior patterns, so the player has to adapt a different tactic to each one, which sets the game apart from the average licensed title of its time.

Reviews at launch praised the game specifically for its graphical quality and faithfulness to the comic source material, though they also noted the higher difficulty of the later levels. Looking back, Chaos in Gotham is commonly cited as one of the best licensed titles on Game Boy Color, and proof that WayForward could squeeze the most out of limited hardware even before founding its own iconic series. For fans of the comic-book Batman as well as collectors of the GBC catalog, it remains a clear pick among the dozens of licensed action games from that era.

Why play it: Fans of the comic-book Batman and GBC catalog collectors alike will be drawn in by the graphical quality and faithfulness to the source material, even though the difficulty in the later levels can seriously test their patience.
