Bomberman Quest
Bomberman Quest steers the popular series away from classic arena battles and offers an action RPG with Zelda-like elements, in which Bomberman explores dungeons, solves puzzles using bombs, and gradually gains new abilities that open up further areas. Bombs here serve not just to take down enemies but also as a tool for revealing secret passages, destroying blocks, or triggering mechanisms, giving exploration a pleasant playfulness. The player gradually discovers new bomb types with different effects, from remote-detonated to ice or fire variants, needed to solve specific puzzles in later areas. Side characters in the individual villages also hand out small quests that extend playtime and reveal further corners of the map beyond the main storyline, giving the game a rhythm close to classic action-adventures.
On Game Boy Color, the world is divided into color-coded areas that make navigating the large map easier, and boss fights require a combination of pattern-watching and clever bomb placement. The music stays true to the series' light, cartoonish tone and complements the mix of exploration and action well, without distracting from puzzle-solving focus. The gradual unlocking of abilities — from stronger bombs to new ways of moving — gives the game a clear sense of growth typical of the action-RPG genre, and motivates the player to return to earlier areas in search of previously inaccessible paths.
At the time of release it was a refreshing detour for fans of the series who were used mainly to multiplayer battles, and reviews praised the inventive combination of puzzle design with traditional Bomberman elements. Today, Bomberman Quest is an interesting reminder of how flexibly the brand could adapt to a different genre without losing its identity, and for fans of action RPGs on GBC it's a title well worth seeking out beyond the main Bomberman arenas.
Why play it: For series fans craving a departure from multiplayer battles, it offers an inventive combination of puzzles and action RPG without losing the Bomberman brand's identity.
