Bookworm
Bookworm is a port of the popular PC game from PopCap Games, in which the player forms words by connecting adjacent letter tiles on a grid in any direction, including diagonals. Longer or less common words earn significantly more points, and a key source of tension comes from burning tiles, which regularly appear from the edge of the grid and must be used in a word before the whole board catches fire and the player loses the game. The player's guide is Lex, a friendly bespectacled bookworm whose comments and tips accompany progress through levels of increasing difficulty. The player can also encounter special golden or flammable tiles with bonus effects, and cleverly working them into a word yields extra points and precious extra seconds.
On the Game Boy Advance, the game preserves the simplicity and accessibility of the PC original — controlling it with the directional pad and a single button to confirm a word works intuitively even without a manual, and the short play sessions suit the handheld format meant for playing on the go perfectly. The visual presentation is clean, text-focused, and free of unnecessary effects, which makes the game suitable even for players who otherwise never look for action or RPG titles on the GBA and prefer calmer entertainment. The lack of time pressure in the basic mode also lets the game be played at one's own pace, taking longer to search for the genuinely best possible word in a given situation.
Bookworm was part of a wave of "casual" games from PopCap Games that in the middle of the decade brought a new, family-friendly kind of entertainment to handhelds and personal computers, standing entirely apart from the traditional action and platformer genres. Thanks to its undemanding nature and pleasant educational undertone of expanding one's vocabulary, it found an audience beyond the core gaming community of the time, and it is still remembered today as one of the most enjoyable and best-tuned word puzzles of its era, whose simple recipe later inspired numerous similar games on smartphones.
