Bait!
Bait! from Swedish studio Resolution Games was one of the most accessible titles of early mobile VR, turning Cardboard into a portable fishing simulator that made no great demands on reflexes or understanding of complex mechanics. The player stands on a pier or a boat, watches the surface of a lake, and uses their gaze plus simple controls to cast a line, wait for a bite, and then reel in the fish, all while calming ambient sounds of water, birds, and rustling nature play in the background.
The game deliberately gave up any reflex-based challenge, instead building on a relaxing, meditative pace, which set it apart from most action-oriented Cardboard titles focused on fast reactions and short adrenaline bursts. The graphics were stylized and colorful, emphasizing the pleasant lake setting, changing weather, and calm water surface, which nicely masked the technical limitations of mobile rendering while giving the game its distinctive, gentle look.
Bait! became one of the examples showing that mobile VR could be used for genres beyond horror and action, and it later grew into a more successful series on more powerful platforms like Gear VR, Daydream, and standalone headsets with controllers. The Cardboard version, however, remains important as the first step that showed calm, low-demand gameplay could be just as suited to short VR sessions as adrenaline-fueled titles, perhaps even more so, given how quickly players tired in headsets of the era and how limited battery life was. In retrospect, Bait! is often cited as an example of a title built on patience and observing the environment, qualities that also appealed to people who otherwise deliberately avoided action or horror Cardboard games, thereby broadening the platform's audience to players seeking calm rather than tension. The short, self-contained play sessions also matched the real capabilities of the hardware at the time well, since a player could stop at any moment, take off the headset, and return later exactly where they left off, without feeling they had missed an important part of the experience or progress.
Why play: For players looking for calm, low-demand VR entertainment without adrenaline; patient fishing suited Cardboard better than most action and horror titles of the time.
