Pirates!
The sun over the Caribbean, wind in the sails, and before you a whole sea full of opportunities — Pirates! is a game that gives you no fixed rails, only the freedom to become a legend. On the Commodore 64 it ranks among the titles that prove the best story is the one the player writes themselves.
Mechanically, it is an inventive genre mix from the workshop of Sid Meier. You command a ship in naval battles, where the wind and maneuvering matter, you fence in man-to-man duels, search for treasure, trade in ports, and navigate across the open map of the Caribbean. You can serve one of four powers, or hunt only for your own profit — and your reputation and wealth grow according to how you conduct yourself.
Pirates! is a model demonstration of Meier's design philosophy: give the player a set of meaningful options and let them assemble their own adventure from them. No title before it had combined so many different gaming disciplines into a single fluid whole so elegantly. The game became one of the milestones of the MicroProse studio and Meier's personal favorite to such a degree that he returned to it in later years in modernized versions.
Culturally, Pirates! captured the romance of pirate adventure long before it became a popular theme of mainstream films. The freedom of sailing, the risk of duels, and the vision of treasure created a combination that enchanted an entire generation and inspired countless later games about exploring an open world.
On the C64, Pirates! is an impressive demonstration of how, even on modest hardware, a game with unexpected breadth and replayable gameplay could be built. No two voyages are the same, and it is precisely this that brings you back on board.
Why play: For the absolute freedom of the pirate life from the workshop of Sid Meier — battles, voyages, treasures, and trade merge into a single story of your own.
