International Soccer – Title screen

Simple but surprisingly deep soccer; one of the first notable sports titles of its time.

Before the licensed mega-hits with real players and television cameras arrived, football existed in a simple but all the purer form. International Soccer for the Commodore 64 was one of the first titles that managed to capture the game on a home computer in a way that had real depth, and it became one of the most characteristic early sports experiences on this platform.

The game captivated above all with its presentation. The playing field was shown from a side, slightly angled view that gave the pitch perspective and depth, and the player figures were remarkably large and animated for their time. The controls rested on a single joystick button, but concealed surprising tactical variety, from passes and shots to defensive work. That made International Soccer a great game for two players at a single machine.

International Soccer was among the titles that Commodore distributed directly and that helped show what the eight-bit machine could do. At a time when the home computer was still seeking its identity as a gaming platform, this game served as a convincing calling card and long remained the reference football experience.

The cultural significance of the game lies in the fact that it set the bar. It showed that football could be conceived on a computer in an entertaining and addictive way, and it created a template from which later, more ambitious titles drew. For many players it was the very first football they played on a screen, and matches between friends dragged on late into the night.

Today International Soccer feels like a museum exhibit of its genre, but it still retains its immediate playability. It's a reminder of a time when one screen, one joystick, and an opponent at your side were enough.

Why play: For pure, immediately graspable football for two, and for a look at what football looked like at the dawn of home computers.
