A sequel to the spatial puzzle where chipping cubes out of a block reveals a 3D model.

Picross 3D: Round 2 is a sequel to the popular spatial puzzle game from the Nintendo DS, in which the player doesn't reveal a picture by filling in squares as in a classic nonogram, but instead chips cubes away from a blocky mass according to numerical hints on its faces. The result is a three-dimensional model — an animal, a vehicle, or an object — that gradually emerges from the shapeless mass, giving the puzzle a satisfying sense of discovery and a spatial logic that few other puzzle games offer.

The game makes full use of the 3DS touch screen: cubes are tapped away and marked with the stylus, the camera can be rotated and zoomed, and the second screen serves as a clear hint display showing remaining rows and columns. Compared to the first entry, new puzzle types were added, along with StreetPass functionality for sharing your own puzzles with other players, and a noticeably larger amount of content, so the game lasts for dozens of hours of gradual solving. Error notifications also appear immediately after a wrong move, so the player never stays confused for long, and even the harder puzzles remain pleasantly legible, since the system always clearly shows exactly where the mistake happened.

Contemporary reception praised above all how elegantly the title develops the idea from the DS version and how well it fits the concept of the 3DS as a platform for thoughtful, undemanding play in small bites. Although it never enjoyed mass popularity like Tetris or the Picross e series, among puzzle game fans it earned a reputation as one of the most polished puzzles of the generation, offering satisfaction both from numbers and logic and from the visual reveal of the finished model. Even today it works flawlessly as relaxing yet mentally stimulating entertainment and is among the titles that best demonstrate what the Nintendo 3DS's dual touch screen was truly made for — calm, focused, unhurried solving, where the player always has both the clue and the emerging three-dimensional result at hand.
