You type a word and the game conjures up the object; only your imagination limits the puzzles.

Scribblenauts Unlimited builds on the series' unique mechanic, where the player solves puzzles and obstacles by literally typing any word, and the game conjures up the corresponding object, animal, or tool from an extensive dictionary. If the player wants to fly across a chasm, they can summon a ladder, a helicopter, or even a dragon - the solution to almost any situation depends only on imagination and vocabulary, making every puzzle an open-ended challenge with many possible answers and rewarding the player for inventiveness as much as for logic.

Compared to earlier entries in the series, Unlimited brings a more elaborate story framework: the main character Maxwell moves through the open city of Fiction together with his sister Lily and completes tasks for its inhabitants, gradually piecing together a family drama that plays out against a backdrop of bizarre and funny situations. The 3DS version also adds the ability to create your own objects using a simple editor and share them with other players, further expanding the already enormous arsenal of possible solutions and extending the game's lifespan through community creations.

Critics praised especially the creative freedom and humor the game offers, as well as how well it works with the 3DS's touch controls when typing words, where the stylus allows for faster and more natural input than on other platforms. Scribblenauts Unlimited was among the best-received entries in the whole series and is still valued today as an exceptional example of a puzzle game that, instead of one correct solution, gives the player genuine freedom in how they reach the goal in their own way, whether through an elegant solution or a deliberately absurd one. For families and younger players it also offers a safe space for experimentation, where there is no wrong answer, only more or less funny and inventive ways of solving a given puzzle, which makes the game excellent for playing together with parents and children, where you can laugh together over especially wacky ideas.
