Intelligent Systems
If there is a studio that can, with quiet confidence, craft a game that swallows dozens of hours of your life and stays with you forever, it is Japan's Intelligent Systems. This unassuming company, based in Kyoto, is one of Nintendo's closest allies and has for decades stood behind titles that pair thoughtful game systems with a surprisingly warm heart. Retro players love it precisely for that combination: behind seemingly simple graphics hides a depth that ages with grace. Whether it is turn-based strategy, a paper-craft adventure, or a puzzle diversion, Intelligent Systems has always honored the principle that gameplay is king.
History
Intelligent Systems was founded in 1986 in Kyoto, just a stone's throw from Nintendo's headquarters, and from the outset was closely intertwined with it. In its early years the company helped with development tools and technologies for Nintendo, among other things contributing to the development of debugging hardware. Soon, however, it set out to create its own work and etched itself into gaming history as early as the late eighties.
The turning point was 1990, when Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi was released on the Famicom. This turn-based strategy with role-playing elements, in which fallen heroes stayed dead permanently, laid the foundations of an entire school of the genre. The Fire Emblem series long remained an exclusively Japanese affair, and only thanks to the characters Marth and Roy, who appeared in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Melee, did interest in a Western release grow. The first installment to officially reach the West was thus the Game Boy Advance entry released under the plain title Fire Emblem (2003).
The nineties and the turn of the millennium rank among the studio's most prolific periods. In 1994 the cult shooter Super Metroid, on which Intelligent Systems collaborated, was created for the SNES. The studio also became famous for puzzle games from the Nintendo universe, among them the colorful matching puzzle Pokémon Puzzle Challenge for the Game Boy Color, which combined the catchy mechanic of falling blocks with the world of Pokémon.
On the Nintendo 64 came Paper Mario in 2000 (in Japan), a witty adventure with a paper-craft aesthetic that gave rise to one of Mario's most beloved spin-offs. And in 2001 another legendary series began in Japan: Advance Wars, a sharply tactical turn-based war on the Game Boy Advance that won legions of devoted fans in the West.
Key Figures
Inseparably linked with Intelligent Systems is Tōru Narihiro, a longtime leading figure at the company, who was involved in a number of its projects and played an important role in the studio's relationship with Nintendo.
The face of the Fire Emblem series is Shōzō Kaga, the author of the original game, whose vision of a ruthlessly demanding strategy where a character's death truly means something defined the entire genre. After his departure, a new generation of creators took over leadership of the series; among them Masahiro Higuchi and Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami stand out, who helped get the series on its feet during difficult years.
The composers deserve special mention. The music for the Fire Emblem series was long created by Yuka Tsujiyoko, whose orchestral and chamber motifs gave the games their unmistakably noble tone. The world of Paper Mario and other titles, in turn, was brought to life by sensitive, playful music that perfectly matched the visual style.
The Present
Intelligent Systems still exists in 2026 and remains one of Nintendo's most trusted development partners. It is based in Kyoto and operates as a closely tied but independent studio, not as an internal Nintendo department; Nintendo, however, remains its main publisher.
The Fire Emblem series is today one of Nintendo's flagships. The installment Fire Emblem: Awakening (2012) saved the series from an uncertain future and turned it into a commercial phenomenon, followed by successful titles such as Fire Emblem Fates, Three Houses, and Engage. The studio continues to develop its other brands as well and tends to the Paper Mario brand together with other Nintendo partners.
For retro players, Intelligent Systems remains an example of a studio that never chased effect at any cost. Its games bet on clean gameplay, clever design, and a distinctive style, and that is exactly why we still gladly fire them up today, whether on the original hardware or on handhelds with emulation. It is a studio that proved that turn by turn, block by block, you can tell a story that endures.
