Game & Wario
Game & Wario is a minigame collection from the creators of the WarioWare series, built around a single mandate: every idea has to live or die by the GamePad. Instead of hundreds of five-second micro-games, it offers roughly a dozen and a half longer, more considered disciplines, in which the controller turns into a bow, a camera, a spy's binoculars, or a sketchbook. In Arrow, you draw a bowstring by dragging a finger across the display; in Shutter, the player looks around a room by tilting the whole controller, hunting for suspicious characters; in Gamer, you hide under the covers and play on the GamePad while on the TV, mother 5-Volt circles the room and the player has to feign sleep just in time.
Gamer is the best demonstration of what a pair of screens can do: one game runs on the display in your hands, another on the TV, and your brain has to track both at once. Alongside the solo disciplines there are also party modes for a group, where one player draws on the touchscreen while the others guess, or the controller gets passed around the table like a deck of cards. The whole thing is held together by typical WarioWare humor — cluttered, ugly-cute, and full of references to older Nintendo games. Between the disciplines, small toys and trinkets also unlock, serving no purpose beyond giving you something to fiddle with for a while.
Visually it's a colorful collage of styles, alternating cartoonish stylization with pixel art and photographic parody, accompanied by a rowdy, deliberately cheap-sounding soundtrack. Contemporary reception was cooler than for the main series; reviewers praised the inventiveness of individual pieces but criticized the limited scope and uneven quality — alongside great ideas there are disciplines good for a single afternoon at best. Today the game reads more as a likeable collection of experiments than a full-fledged title, yet it remains one of the best proofs that the GamePad could offer things impossible to replicate elsewhere. As an evening game for guests, passed from hand to hand, it still works great.
