Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a remake of the second entry in the Fire Emblem series from 1992, completely reworked for the Nintendo 3DS with a new visual style and a range of modern improvements. The player alternately commands two armies, Alm's and Celica's, fighting on opposite sides of the continent of Valentia, divided by a conflict between two deities. Compared to newer entries in the series, the game returns to some older mechanics, such as free movement on the world map between battles and the absence of the classic weapon triangle, which gives the turn-based battles a different rhythm than Awakening or Fates. The game also includes side trips into optional dungeons, where the player searches for valuable items and unlocks the side stories of individual warriors, deepening what would otherwise be a straightforward main plot.
The combat system relies on thoughtful placement of units on grid-based maps, permanent character death at the standard difficulty, and deep background stories for individual heroes, revealed through dungeons explored outside the main battles – a new addition the remake made compared to the original. On the 3DS, the game runs smoothly, uses stereoscopic 3D for battle animations, and is accompanied by an orchestral score that ranks among the best-rated in the whole series. The visual style combines detailed 2D character portraits with simpler 3D models on the battlefield, while animated cutscenes give key plot twists the weight they deserve.
Upon release, Shadows of Valentia received praise for its courage in returning to the series' roots and for its strong, melancholic story, though some players criticized its slower pace. It also earned recognition for the emphasis placed on characterizing side characters, who in the original early-1990s game remained almost nameless. Today the title is valued especially by Fire Emblem fans as one of the last major RPG projects for the 3DS and as proof that even turn-based strategy games can offer emotional storytelling comparable to classic JRPGs.
