Half-Life – obaly dílů série

Half-Life arrived in 1998 from Valve and presented first-person action as a smooth, uninterrupted narrative with no cutscenes — the player, as scientist Gordon Freeman, lives through a disaster at the Black Mesa research facility in real time, and the game became one of the most influential titles of its era thanks to sophisticated enemy behaviour, scripted sequences, and an atmosphere of science-fiction horror heightened by the mysterious figure of the G-Man. Studio Gearbox went on to make the side campaigns Opposing Force and Blue Shift, telling the same story from other characters' viewpoints. Enormously influential too was the Counter-Strike modification, built on the Half-Life engine, which grew from a fan-made mod into one of the most played multiplayer shooters in history and demonstrated the power of the modding community that formed around the game and its map editor.

Half-Life 2 in 2004 pushed the series further with the Source physics engine, which let players manipulate objects using the gravity gun, and with the visually and narratively striking setting of occupied City 17. The game required activation through the then-new digital distribution service Steam, which initially bred distrust among players but gradually helped establish the whole model of selling games online. It remains regarded today as one of the genre's high points and influenced dozens of later titles through its emphasis on physics and pacing that never breaks for cutscenes. Episodic follow-ups, Episode One and Episode Two, developed the story in smaller instalments and promised further chapters, until Valve halted further episodes and the series fell silent for many years, sparking a long-running, still very much alive joke among players about the missing third instalment.

The return finally came with Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, a game designed exclusively for virtual reality, set between the events of the first and second games, which showed what a big-budget, technically ambitious VR action title could look like, with controls carefully built for headsets and motion controllers. Despite its long silences, the series is regarded as one of the most influential in the history of first-person action, both for its uninterrupted storytelling techniques and for the technological innovations and indirect influence it had on the rise of the Steam platform and the whole modding culture that grew out of Half-Life.
