Half-Life 2: VR Mod

A fan-made VR mod of the legendary shooter; you hold the gravity gun directly in your hand.

Half-Life 2: VR Mod is a community modification of the original Half-Life 2, which converts the classic 2004 shooter into a fully playable version for virtual reality, with support for hand controller movements, physical weapon aiming, and the ability to manipulate the legendary gravity gun directly with your hand. The mod includes both the base game and its episodic expansions, and tries to preserve the original level design while adapting the controls to the new way of playing, including adjustments to firefights and vehicle sequences.

Work on the mod took several years and required reworking animations, control schemes, and parts of the user interface so they would work naturally in spatial display. The result is an experience that lets you relive iconic locations such as Ravenholm or Black Mesa East from a completely new perspective, where the player physically ducks behind cover and manually reloads weapons, giving otherwise well-known scenes a new sense of tension. Vehicle control, such as driving the airboat or the buggy, also gained a different, more physical feel in VR.

After release, the mod was received very positively as one of the most ambitious and best-executed community conversions of a classic game into VR, which Valve subsequently supported through official distribution on Steam. For many long-time fans of the Half-Life series, the mod represented a chance to relive a beloved story in a way that the original game could not offer at the time of its creation, and it became proof of the vitality of community creation around older Valve titles even many years after their original release. The fact that volunteers, without official support from the studio, managed to convert such an extensive and technically complex game into a functional VR form was often cited as an example of how far a modding community can go when it has access to an open and well-documented game engine.

Why play it: For fans of the Half-Life series who want to experience a beloved story in a way the original could not offer at the time – proof of how far a modding community can go without official support.
